The ABCs of Traveling to India

After spending 2.5 weeks in India, I learned a lot – and not just about India and how incredible it is.  I also learned how to maximize enjoyment and minimize aggravation when traveling to and within the country.

To round out the final of my India blogs, here are my ABCs – hope you find this information helpful!

A is for Air India.  This is one of the main airlines in India and is part of Star Alliance.  Fares are typically cheap, but note that the planes are very old and dirty so don’t expect a high end experience.  They are more well known for being delayed compared to some of the other airlines.

B is for Baggage.  Traveling intra-India, your luggage weight is limited to 15kg for checked bags.  Also, you must make sure you add paper tags to each of your carry ons because they are stamped after going through security.  This is then double checked  prior to boarding the airplane.

C is for Calcutta.  This was my favorite city of the 5 I visited.  Lots of culture and lots to do.  Make sure you try out Calcutta Walks as well!

D is for Driver.  Depending on your travel budget, I felt the safest as a female traveling alone when I hired a driver that was affiliated with my hotel.  There are also cabs and tuk tuks as options.

E is for Elephants.  Depending on where you go, you can see real live elephants in India!  I had the pleasure of seeing some in Goa.  🙂

F is for Food.  The food is INCREDIBLE but your safest bet to avoid “Delhi belly” is to ensure you eat cooked food vs. raw and stay away from meat when eating from street vendors.  Fruit that has to be peeled is also your safest bet to keep your tummy happy.

G is for Gate. There are multiple “gates” throughout India that are gorgeous sites to visit.  I saw the ones in Mumbai and Delhi.

H is for Hinduism. 80% of the population in India is Hindu and you will have the opportunity to see plenty of temples and Hindu gods throughout your travels.  Make sure you remove your shoes and dress appropriately when visiting any of the temples.
